Credit crunch baby boom
When the going gets tough, the tough have an early night. Brits are beating the credit crunch by having fun in time-honoured fashion: staying in and making babies.
The recession is making couples passionate about saving money by turning in, and, if soaring sales at chemists and maternity wear shops are anything to go by, turning the economic bust into a baby boom. Pregnancy kit sales are on the up, Mothercare’s sales have rocketed by 20%, and Mamas and Papas maternity dress sales have risen by 46%.
But couples should think ahead, warned Bounty editor Dorothy Thomas, saying ‘Far be it from us to put a dampener on anyone’s early nights, but short term gain can mean long term pain. Sex may be free, but babies and children can cost a small fortune.’
