Kate Nash
Made Of Bricks
Dismissed by some as the poor woman’s Lily Allen, North London teenager Kate’s debut is actually a real joy to listen to.
Kate cites American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman as one of her influences and you can hear it in the often wistful tunes, mixed with the kind of quirky lyrics you’d expect from a teenager dealing with love, life, lousy boyfriends and even lousier friends.
Made Of Bricks is like re-reading your old schoolgirl diaries all over again – occasionally cringe-inducing, more often deeply moving, with real insight into what it’s like in those difficult years between girlie and grown-up.
Kate first got into music when her acting career failed to take off, this CD proves that the theatre’s loss is definitely music fans’ gain.

Crowded House
Time On Earth
The biggest band ever to come out of New Zealand (okay, we know that isn’t exactly saying much...), many mourned the passing of Crowded House when they decided to call it a day in 1996. For the 10 or so years before that they graced the charts with some of the classiest pop around, including Weather With You and the brilliant Don’t Dream It’s Over.
The group had various line-ups behind master songwriter Neil Finn.
Neil’s enjoyed a respected solo career since Crowded House called it a day but everybody seems to be jumping on the ‘reformation’ bandwagon these days - well, it worked for Take That - and the result is a wonderfully melodic album dripping with good tunes. Welcome back boys.

Paul Potts
Once Chance
The nation cried when Carphone Warehouse salesman Paul Potts opened his mouth to sing Nessun Dorma on Britain’s Got Talent. An instant worldwide hit on You Tube, it didn’t really matter whether he won the final or not, this debut album of classic opera tracks mixed with modern anthems was inevitable. The fact he did indeed win was icing on the cake for Paul - and the fact this album is something special is as much down to Paul’s flawless voice as the back story behind it.
Nessun Dorma opens this collection, which includes Cavatina (the theme from the film The Deer Hunter) and opera-inspired versions on My Way and You Raise Me Up.
