CELEB HAIR
Victoria Beckham has just gone back to her old hair style in preparation for the Spice Girls reunion tour - and experts reckon it looks fab. But which celeb hairstyle is best for you?
Victoria Beckham
Rumours abound that Victoria is about to change her hair yet again as the Spice Girls prepare for their world tour. One prediction is that she’s about to morph from Posh Spice to Ginger and get her locks dyed red.
Not sure what Geri Halliwell would make of that - or husband David, who’s apparently been very happy to see his missus with a similar, all be it blonder, haircut to the one she had when they first met.
Her current ‘Pob’ is a particularly flattering cut - and as Jade Goody proved when she changed to a similar style after her recent hair extension style disaster, you don’t have to be as finely chiselled in the facial region as Victoria to carry it off.
But as choppy and apparently casual as the style looks, this is a high maintenance cut needing constant attention. Unless your hair is dead straight, there’s a lot of blow drying, straightening and regular trims involved in looking this spontaneously gorgeous.
Good for: young mums with lots of time on their hands and a partner who really understands the importance of a good hair cut.
Kate Moss
There’s nothing quite like an image overhaul to get over a broken heart. After her split with Pete Doherty, Kate has bloomed and thrown herself into a life of partying, as well as the arms of a new man Jamie Hines who looks like the scary love child of Pete Doherty and Kate’s former boyfriend Jefferson Hack, the father of her four-year-old daughter, Lila-Grace.
So a new do was inevitable and Kate, reported in the past to have worries about getting older (don’t we all), has chosen her new style well.
A fringe not only looks youthful and fun, it can also be a great way to hide worry lines or wrinkles on your forehead (not that we’re suggesting Kate suffers from anything like that, of course!).
There’s little as ageing as lank, greasy hair but Kate has been stepping out with glossy, luscious locks that she is obviously looking after well.
If you’ve a natural wave to your hair this is a flattering, a low maintenance cut that means you really can just wash and go.
Good for: free spirits more interested in their relationship with their new man than their hair straighteners.
Amy Winehouse
Amy’s not the first female musician to fall in love with the bee hive. In the 60s Dusty Springfield; in the 80s the B-52s and Mari Wilson; now, it’s the turn of Camden Town’s favourite daughter to discover what many a woman has found before - big hair = even bigger impact.
True, Amy’s towering mop can sometimes look as shaky as the singer sheltering beneath it and nobody would be surprised if someone discovered a family of chaffinches living in there.
But a larger than life character like Amy just wouldn’t be the same with a Pob.
A do like this takes hard work, hairspray and usually a good few hair extensions to keep it upwardly mobile. To get the effect at home you would at least need lots of kirby grips, and a good stout spine to allow the hours of bending over in front of the mirror back combing it into place. But as signature looks go, you won’t get much better than this.
Good for: women who love to rebel. And for storing your mobile in when your pockets aren’t big enough.
Sarah Harding
The drop dead gorgeous Girls Aloud singer normally looks stunning, sassy and sexy – not like the First Officer of the USS Enterprise. This Mr Spock style, Sixties-inspired do is so severe you almost expect it to wag its finger and start giving everyone detention. We think she may have been going for an Annie Lennox type look, only the stylist seems to have got lost at the Planet Vulcan on the way.
Even Sarah’s enviable cheekbones can’t carry this off – it’s too short to be a bob and too long to be a crop.
Good for: women with a thing about aliens – and pointy ears.
Beverley from The X-factor
This is how to go short with style. When the singing teacher appeared on the first live show of the TV talent contest, her mentor Louis Walsh had her dress up in a huge wig that looked more like curly haired Queen guitarist Brian May than a modern pop idol in the making.
But when Beverley went back to her close cropped hair the next week she looked – and sounded - stunning.
Not everyone can carry off such a severe cut (are you listening Sarah Harding?) but Beverley’s perfectly proportioned features make it a particularly flattering look for her.
As a working mum, she doesn’t have much time to spend looking after herself but this cut looks stylish and trendy.
Good for: sassy divas and confident women comfortable in their own skin.
Jordan
Following the same principle as Amy Winehouse, Katie Price knows that a tiny woman can command a huge presence provided her hair is as big as her personality.
This style is pure showbiz. Seemingly defying the laws of gravity, it‘s all about heavy highlights, lashings of hairspray and absolutely has to be accompanied by a glowing Beverly Hills-type tan.
When your hair has been bleached as often as Jordan’s you need to give it constant tender, loving, care and regular conditioning treatments so this do is not exactly low maintenance.
Balance is the key here. With a chest as gargantuan as Jordan’s, flat hair would just look silly. As with big breasts, uplift is all.
Good for: every girl who’s ever secretly wished to be Barbie. Hair heaven starts and end here.
