 Yoga 'causing stresses and strains'

29 Nov 2007

Yoga

Once a relaxation technique mainly associated with the pregnant or spiritual, yoga's popularity has recently soared, with Brits of both sexes and all ages now taking part.

Experts are growing increasingly concerned, however, about the amount of strain people are putting on their bodies by taking part in what is generally regarded a less strenuous form of exercise.

US magazine Time recently reported that surgeons and chiropractors in the US have seen a rise in the number of patients with yoga-related injuries.

Robin Shepherd of the General Osteopathic Council said: "People get lulled into a false sense of security because yoga has the image of being a very low-impact activity.

"I see patients who are injured as a result of yoga."

Yoga is particularly popular among the rich and famous with fans of the practice including Madonna, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss and Gwyneth Paltrow.

It is thought that the huge boom in the number of people taking up the technique could be causing an increase in unqualified or badly trained teachers.
