Traffic light labelling 'best for outlining nutritional information'25 Jan 2008
Labelling food products with a traffic light diagram detailing nutritional content will make it easier for consumers to make healthier choices, according to a leading UK consumer watchdog.Which? has championed the traffic light labelling system on food products, introduced by the Food Standards Agency, over other schemes such as the Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) initiative. Research conducted by Which? found that 97 per cent of consumers were able to correctly identify and compare nutritional information using the traffic light scheme.Sue Davis, Which? chief policy advisor, said: "Traffic lights are the best way of helping consumers make healthier food choices at a glance. People tend to shop in a rush so a label that they can interpret at a glance is more useful than a label that requires mental arithmetic.""Some retailers are using a combination of traffic lights and GDAs and we think that this is a possible compromise that could ensure a uniform scheme," she added.
