 Retail therapy 'an official anti-depressant'

Retail therapy

Women across the UK can now cancel their gym membership, ditch the diets and forget cosmetic surgery as scientists have confirmed that shopping is good for your health.

Research conducted by neuropsychologist Dr David Lewis at Mind Laboratories found that over half of women studied felt physically better after a good shopping spree, with 44 per cent claiming to have burnt off just as many calories in an hour spent shopping as they would have in the gym.

"The "buzz" people receive from value-for-money purchases creates a physiological reaction that is very similar to that experienced with physical exercise: heart rates increase and blood pressures rises, which all lead to the body functioning more efficiently and healthily," he explained.

Figures show that almost three quarters of women in the UK get more of a thrill from shopping bargains than from eating chocolate, while 93 per cent prefer the good feeling they get from a thrifty shop to a kiss from their partner.

Therefore, science shows that shopping can not only make you slimmer but can also make you happier too.
