Quality of sleep 'important' to stress management
20 Feb 2008

For many, stress can dramatically affect the ability to sleep which in turn then increases stress levels further creating a vicious cycle of anxiety and tiredness, according to the Stress Management Society.
Rather than going straight to bed when feeling stressed or tense at night, experts recommend getting into the "right frame of mind" before trying to fall asleep.
Neil Shah, director of the Stress Management Society, said: "If you are not taking the time to relax, if you're not getting the good quality of sleep, then your ability to deal with stress is dramatically diminished.
"Your ability to cope with anything, both physically and mentally, is massively reduced, so it becomes even more difficult. The importance of good quality sleep cannot be underestimated."
According to a new study from Travelodge, as many as 23 million Brits loose lose one hour's sleep every night thinking about work the next day.
Mr Shah recommended doing some relaxing breathing exercises, stretching or yoga, or running a hot bath in the evening to help relax before bed.
