Postnatal fitness 'different for everyone'17 Jan 2008
When it comes to shifting post-pregnancy baby weight, "every woman is different", according to the Royal College of Midwives (RCM).Commenting on the influence of celebrity pregnancies on new mums, midwife Mervi Jokinen advised that women make sure they don't try to get their weight back to normal too quickly after giving birth. She said: "You should ensure that [you're not] going out on a limb trying to get your weight back within three weeks because somebody has reported that they are back to their same shape and weight in three weeks. Not every woman will fit into that category."Experts recommend starting a postnatal fitness regime between two to three months after the birth to allow time for the body to heal and for both mum and baby to settle into a daily routine. Ms Jokinen advised: "Find something that you enjoy and just start slow and simple, and increase as you feel."Setting realistic targets for post-baby weight loss will help maintain motivation, however, goals should be matched to individual abilities and needs.
