Postnatal exercise encouraged for new mums09 Nov 2007
Postnatal exercise for new mothers is encouraged as it helps them regain their pre-pregnancy shape and repair their bodies after childbirth, a physiotherapist with the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Women's Health (ACPWH) reports. Gill Brook from the ACPWH said: "Most maternity units will either [offer] a physiotherapist or at least give an advice leaflet if [the mother] is going home very quickly afterwards. "To help get [mothers] back to normal, things like exercising their tummy muscles and pelvic floor muscles will be encouraged from day one." However, Ms Brook urges that there's a need for a little bit for caution as the pregnancy and certainly the birth do make some areas of your body a little bit vulnerable.Experts advise new mums to be careful not to rush into vigorous exercise and to stick to gentle exercise for up to five months following the birth. Post-pregnancy fitness can have significant physical benefits as well as giving new mothers an important psychological boost.
