Painful joints 'not just an effect of ageing'31 Mar 2008
Often wrongly believed to be just part of the ageing process, painful joints, associated with arthritis, can affect anyone at any time in their lives, according to NHS Direct. Trisha Hamilton, deputy chief nurse at NHS Direct, explained: "It is recognised that rheumatoid arthritis affects all age groups. Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory process that happens when the body's immune system is attacking and destroying its own joint."Arthritis Care reports that one in five of the UK's adult population is living with arthritis, 81 per cent of which admit to being in constant pain as a result of the condition. Experts advise sufferers of chronic joint pain to partake in gentle exercise in addition to their regular pain relief to help alleviate symptoms. Interestingly, pregnancy has been found to abate the symptoms of arthritis. According to Arthritis Care, 70 to 80 per cent of pregnant sufferers have reported that pregnancy helps to subdue their symptoms.Discuss this item in our forums
