Natural tomato extract 'helps protect skin from within' 13 May 2008
British researchers have discovered that a tomato extract may help protect the skin against sun damage and ageing. A new study from the universities of Newcastle and Manchester found that people who consumed five tablespoons of tomato paste rich in lycopene every day for 12 weeks had 33 per cent more protection against the sun. In addition, those who supplemented their diet with the tomato paste had higher levels of pro-collagen in their skin - a lack of which leads to signs of ageing. Co-researcher professor Lesley Rhodes said at the British Society for Investigative Dermatology annual meeting: "The tomato diet boosted the level of pro-collagen in the skin significantly. These increasing levels suggest potential reversal of the skin ageing process. This is in addition to the significant reduction in sunburn."A powerful antioxidant, lycopene naturally defends the body from free radicals, with two to three times more force than beta carotene.Discuss this item in our forums
