Modern lifestyle linked to rise in food intolerance

The increasing number of people in the UK suffering from food intolerance may be a consequence of changing lifestyle habits, Food Intolerance Awareness (FIA) has suggested.

Muriel Simmons, chief executive of FIA, said that while stress is a mitigating factor, the types of foods we eat also play a part.

"We don't eat in the way we used to. We tend to buy ready prepared foods and that can often mean that there are additives in there that never used to be in food. We also eat at a much faster pace than we used to," she explained.

She added: "At one time you would have to eat by rotation because you couldn’t get certain foods at certain times of the year. Now, we can eat all foods whenever we want – very few come in and go out of season now."

According to Allergy UK, two per cent of the population suffers from a food allergy that is potentially fatal, while 45 per cent suffer from a food intolerance.

Figures show that irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) most commonly affects those aged between 20 and 30 years old and is twice as common in women.
