Long-term exercise 'keeps weight gain at bay'

06 Nov 2007

Long-term exercise

Maintaining a consistent exercise regime as you age not only increases the likelihood of keeping a healthy body but also reduces the amount of weight gain over time, according to a new report.

Research from Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine found that women - aged between 18 and 30 years old - who participated in vigorous physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes each day were more than twice as likely to maintain a stable BMI over a 20-year period.

"The results will hopefully encourage young people to become more active and to maintain high activity over a lifetime," said Arlene Hankinson, lead author and an instructor in preventive medicine at the Feinberg School.

Exercise such as jogging, cycling or swimming are all excellent ways of keeping fit and can be easily integrated into a busy lifestyle, experts say.

Post-pregnancy exercise can be a fun way to involve partners and new babies, offering quality time for family bonding as well as helping to regain a pre-baby figure. ADNFCR-1318-ID-18344172-ADNFCR
