Lip gloss increases risk of skin cancer, study suggests

Women who regularly use lip balm or lip gloss as part of their daily beauty regime, have been urged to only apply the products after protecting the lips with sun block, Medical News Today reports.

Research conducted at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas discovered that cosmetic lip balms and glosses attract ultraviolet rays, increasing the wearer's risk of developing skin cancer.

Lip protection is particularly important as the skin on lips is very thin and more prone to ageing from sun damage.

Dermatologist Dr Christine Brown warned that if you are going to be exposed to sunlight for over 20 minutes you should apply a sun block with an SPF of 30 beforehand.

"What most people don't realise is they're actually increasing light penetration through the lip surface by applying something clear and shiny to them," she explained.

She recommends that women apply a layer of sun protection underneath a balm or gloss before going outside as part of their everyday beauty routine.
