Lifestyle changes 'can help battle depression' 23 Jan 2008
A healthy lifestyle can have a significantly positive impact on the fight against depression, according to psychiatrists. Taking regular exercise and minimising alcohol consumption can offer depression-sufferers naturally effective alternatives to managing the condition.Dr Jim Bolton, consultant psychiatrist at South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust, said: "There are all sorts of things, such as making sure you have a healthy diet. Taking some regular exercise for a lot of people this is good and can have an anti-depressive effect in its own right. "Not drinking too much alcohol. People sometimes have a drink to make themselves feel better but it will actually make you feel more depressed in the long run, so watch the amount you drink."He added: "Talking with other people it is often helpful. Often its families and friends, but if you want to take it outside of the family, all GPs should have access to counselling and psychotherapy."In May 2007, The Times reported that Britain had become a "Prozac nation" as the number of Britons prescribed antidepressants reached a record high 31 million prescriptions for antidepressant drugs were written in 2006.Discuss this item in our forums
