Get into shape with probiotics

Promoting a healthy gastro-intestinal (GI) system can have significant beauty benefits, such as creating a clearer complexion, as well as improving overall fitness and wellbeing.

It allows the body to digest food efficiently, absorb essential nutrients and offers protection against germs and toxins.

Probiotics account for more than 60 per cent of our body's immune defences and so regular intake of these 'friendly' bacteria can help boost everyday health by preventing common complaints such as indigestion and bloating.

Not only can a good quality probiotic supplement aid disease prevention, but studies have also revealed the positive effects of its anti-ageing properties.

A recent study from Imperial College London found that probiotics such as yoghurt drinks can affect the body's metabolism.

Professor Jeremy Nicholson, corresponding author on the study from the Department of Biomolecular Medicine at Imperial College, said: "Introducing 'friendly' bacteria can change the dynamics of the whole population of microbes in the gut."
