Fitness goes virtual 29 Feb 2008
Increasing numbers of busy women are recognising the benefits of virtual games as a new accessible way of keeping fit. According to the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP), playing virtual games such as tennis or boxing on the Nintendo Wii will contribute to the recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise. In December last year, Reuters reported that occupational therapists in the US believe the Wii helped patients to build balance, coordination, endurance and upper and lower body strength.A spokesperson for the CSP said: "The Wii is good for motivating people who are usually not interested in sport."He explained: "The key to using the Wii safely, to avoid any injuries, is to recognise that it can work areas of the body that might not be used to exercise. People should use some appropriate warm-up techniques before playing one of the more demanding sports-based games."One of the benefits of the Wii is that you can improve fitness without even leaving the house - a key bonus for busy mums.Discuss this item in our forums
