Brits 'still not getting 5 A Day'
15 Jan 2008

Half of Brits only consume up to three portions of fruit and vegetables each day, a new survey has revealed.
Research carried out by Appletiser has found that busy lifestyles and rising costs of fresh produce are preventing the majority of young people from getting their recommended five portions of fruit and veg per day.
Figures show that four per cent of people don't eat any fruit or veg, while one in five say they simply couldn't be bothered making the conscious effort.
Nutritionist and author Anita Bean said: "It's clear from the excuses given in the survey that most people think eating five a day is too much time and effort. This is bad news because it means they're missing out on vital vitamins, minerals and other protective substances that can protect us from heart disease, strokes, and some cancers."
As well as being low-calorie, low-fat options, fruit and vegetables are rich sources of essential nutrients that improve health and boost wellbeing such as folic acid, vitamin C and potassium.
"Research proves that eating five a day also increases our immunity against minor infections such as colds and flu, prevents age-related memory loss and even helps strengthen our bones," Ms Bean added.
