Boost happy hormones the natural way
28 Apr 2008

Rather than reaching for a bottle of wine or chocolate bar at the end of a long day, one expert claims that we can feel good with food by balancing serotonin levels in a healthier way.
Former paediatrician Dr Caroline Longmore explains that serotonin imbalance in the body can cause problems including weight gain, PMS, eating disorders, migraines and depression.
Widely known for its mood-enhancing properties, according to Dr Longmore, serotonin can be boosted naturally by consuming a diet high in tryptophan.
"Depression isn't like a broken leg where you can take the cast off and it is better - that is the frightening thing. It is such a debilitating affliction, but because it is inside the mind, it is very difficult for many others to understand and empathise," a patient commented.
Figures show that depression is the number one psychological disorder that affects the western world. It is predicted that at its current rate, it will be the second most disabling condition worldwide behind heart disease by 2020.
