Boost fitness by bike, experts say

With the government launching a £140 million cycling plan for the next three years, cycling looks set to become an easier way for busy mums to keep fit.

Not only is travelling by bike environmentally-friendly but it saves time and money spent on overcrowded public transport and waiting in traffic.

Regular cycling can also help boost the immune system and ward off troublesome coughs and colds as the body becomes more effective at fighting infection.

Claire Beaumont, Evans Cycles' fitness expert, said: "Cycling to work has many more health benefits than you think. We all think of it as an alternative mode of transport but the workout you get from riding helps keep you fit without realising it and is so much better for your wellbeing especially this time of year when everyone is coughing and sneezing on public transport."

According to government health guidelines, adults are recommended to spend at least 30 minutes exercising or partaking in some form of physical activity every day.
