BACD rallies against govt laser treatment deregulation 01 May 2008
The British Association of Cosmetic Doctors (BACD) has warned that the government's proposals to deregulate lasers and intense pulse light (IPL) technologies are putting the public at risk. By signing a petition against the Department of Health's (DOH) proposals, the association has called for the deregulation of laser treatments to be rejected. Leading the campaign, BACD member Dr Paul Myers said: "The BACD has been credited by a government committee for bringing education and direction to cosmetic dermatology in the UK. "Although lasers and IPL can be safe if administered in an appropriate clinical environment by a trained clinician, the public must be aware that these procedures do pose some risks, of burning and scarring when in the wrong hands."Women tend to opt for IPL treatments as a longer-lasting alternative to hair removal, particularly popular in the run up to summer. Potential dangers include laser burns and eye damage if performed by untrained clinicians.Discuss this item in our forums
