 Avoiding sunburn 'vital' this summer

07 May 2008

Avoiding sunburn

Brits are advised to avoid sunburn this summer by covering up and protecting their skin with adequate sun block, to prevent the risk of skin cancer, Cancer Research UK has warned.

According to Dr Lesley Walker, director of cancer information at the organisation, figures show that non-melanoma - a largely non life-threatening form of skin cancer - is on the rise.

New findings from Ecofys, published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal, suggested that a two to four per cent rise in average summer temperatures could lead to "substantial increases" in the number of new skin cancer cases.

The warnings follow a recent report from the British Association of Dermatologists that indicated the UK had the highest rate of skin cancer in Europe for children aged up to 14 and teenagers aged between 15 and 19.

Cancer Research UK states that 9,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma skin cancer each year and that 78 per cent of men and 91 per cent of women are alive five years after diagnosis.

Around 2,300 people die from skin cancer every year in the UK and around 1,800 of these are from melanoma.
