A love of big earrings 'could lead to surgery'12 May 2008
Heavy earrings may add that finishing touch to the perfect outfit, but doctors say that they can be more dangerous than dazzling, reports reveal. According to plastic surgeons, more and more women are seeking surgical help to repair torn earlobes damaged by heavy earrings. When earlobes tear as a result of wearing weighty accessories, often the lobe doesn't heal by simply stopping wearing earrings. Richard Ha, plastic surgeon at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, said: "Just removing the earring often times does not allow the hole to close because that has become a mature tract."Getting earlobes surgically repaired is performed under local anesthetic and takes up to an hour. Earlobe surgery can also remove 'lumpy scars' that can form after ear piercing. Figures show that up to 35 per cent of people with pierced ears have one or more complications, from infection to allergic reactions. Discuss this item in our forums
